CHAPTER SEVEN

Rose found him in the kitchen, keeled over a pile of books, including the stolen Vargas index. He barely looked up when she entered and put on the kettle. Rifling through the drawers, she sighed and picked at a tea can.

“Making tea. Whaddya have? I think all Amy’s got is Earl Grey and mint.”

“Ugh,” Zach looked up at last, suddenly attentive. He had obviously been keenly aware of her since she’d walked back into the cabin, but had been hiding it behind his books. “Definitely Earl Grey. Hot. Who the hell ever chooses mint?”

She laughed. “Well, just ‘cause you said that, I am. Don’t want mint to feel left out.”

He shut the books gently as she sat down on the other side of the table and pushed her chin into her elbows like a pedestal, her eyes watching him intently. Maybe Amy had been right. Zach’s stiff and unresponsive, often less than committal, correspondence had slackened noticeably in the last few days, even more so in the last few hours. She checked her watch. There was still a good three hours before dawn she estimated.

“Find anything else?”

He shook his head. He looked a bit more rested, but there was gauntness to him now, something wired tight. His face was still handsome though, and she fought an urge to reach out and stroke the fine sharp angles of his jawline. She wondered, without meaning to, if he was anything like Aram under those clothes.

“Nothing much. I can only hope that Aram manages to figure something out. Otherwise, it’s a dead end,” Zach’s face was strained.

“It’s… it’s okay,” she said, “I’m just glad… that you’re here. With me. I know that probably sounds stupid, but there it is. It’s put my mind at ease.”

Zach lifted his eyes, uncertain of what to say. “You’re the Diplomat, you’re in my protection,” he started to say.

“I know, right,” she tapped her head, “this is just another annoying job for you.”

She didn’t mean for it to come out so flippant, and was even more surprised by the dagger of hurt that crept into her voice. Whether or not she believed her own accusatory remark, she wasn’t sure, only that Zach’s eyes wrenched again, but this time it was because he knew he had been misunderstood, and didn’t know how to properly express himself.

Rose sighed and nodded and went to pour the hot water, trying to hide her shame. The water splashed into the cups, and she felt her eyes grow hot. I’m so foolish, she thought, and willed herself not to cry. It was ridiculous. What did she expect from the cold-hearted vampire? Some glimmer of tenderness? Yes, she thought, and felt even more foolish.

Her hands fumbled on the cups. But before she could turn to bring them back to the table she felt a presence behind her. Zach’s hands reached around her, alighting on her own, and her trembling stopped and she let go of the cups. Her breath was caught in her throat,
